UK Deaf Sport provides support, raises awareness and campaigns for deaf people, ensuring equal opportunities in sport and physical activity. Its mission is for more deaf people to participate in sports throughout their lives and more deaf athletes to perform on the world stage.

Destination Deaflympics is UK Deaf Sport’s Youth Engagement programme. It aims to inspire deaf children aged 8 to 16 to be active, as well as to raise awareness of the Deaflympics, DeaflympicsGB and other deaf sports and athletes.

The objective of the programme is for young people to complete 10 physical activity challenges and get to Tokyo before the opening of the Deaflympics in November 2025.

In the run up to the Deaflympics, young people will be able to travel a fun and stimulating virtual journey to Tokyo. Children in deaf schools, National Deaf Children’s Society and community groups and deaf sports clubs and their families will work together to complete the physical group challenges, each linked to a previous Deaflympics host destination and Deaflympic sport. Young people will learn about the history of the games, interesting facts about former host countries and Deaflympic sports as well as enjoying interactive messages from current and past Deaflympians. Deaf schools, community and sports groups will be able to win rewards such as a Deaflympian visit or sports kit.

The programme will also be out in the community by organising Have a Go Days and collaborations with Deaf National Governing Bodies. The programme aims to help tackle the ‘activity gap’ which sees deaf young people around half as likely as their hearing counterparts to be physically active.

Destination Deaflympics represents the first steps on UK Deaf Sport’s journey to engaging directly at grass roots’ level, with young people.  It’s just the beginning!

Sport and physical activity in school is very important as our children travel in from all over London. They use public transport or taxis every day and don’t walk, run or cycle to school. It’s therefore important we include as much physical activity in our curriculum as possible.
