Re-engage
Re-engage aims to minimise the impact of loneliness and isolation on older people and help them to live happier, more fulfilled lives.
The charity’s research shows that 1 million older people regularly go for a month between social interactions and isolation has been proven to be associated with a 50% increased risk of developing dementia.

In 2023/2024, Re-engage supported almost 7,000 older people with the help of nearly 9,000 volunteers. The charity engages with the older people in a number of ways. Its tea parties are monthly social groups open to people aged 75 and over and give older people regular afternoons of conversation and laughter with friends of all ages. Call Companions is the charity’s telephone befriending service, where volunteers have weekly calls with the older person they are matched with. And Re-engage’s activity groups, which include tai chi, boules, dancing and skittles, help older people stay active.
Re-engage has recently partnered with Parkinson’s UK following which they are matching older people with this condition with younger people who have experience of the condition.
In a survey carried out between April 2023 and March 2024, feelings of loneliness among Re-engage’s service users dropped consistently; the number who 'often or always' feel lonely decreased by 47% and those who 'often' feel they lack companionship fell by 32%. In addition, their service users reported a 58% increase in high/very high life satisfaction and 63% have more social connections since joining Re-engage.
I look forward to Wednesday evenings as I have a lovely young man phoning me; we have a good laugh and try to put the world to rights.
